Friday (viernes) May 28, 2004

Took a test today and did well.  We test each Friday.  I still need to learn more verb conjugations before I can advance to the next level.  Maybe next week!  It rained most of the night, so things were really wet this morning.  Kinda made it hard for the laundry to dry, since it hangs outside - No dryer.  Maybe by tonight I will have some more dry jeans and t-shirts.  (Donīt worry MOM - I brought plenty of underwear and socks!)  The shower quit this morning.  Just about the time I got all lathered up and shampoo in my hair it just stopped and then started again with just a COLD drip.  It was a challenge, but I survived.  I guess this is a common problem and nothing to worry about, you just need to work around it.

Took a taxi by myself yesterday and made it just fine.  The driver understood me and that does a lot for my confidence.  The orphanage is really a perfect place for me to work.  There are only girls there and they range in age.  I spent 3 hours helping some of them with their homework (tarea).  At one point I had a baby on one side of my lap, a 7 year old drawing pictures on the other and 2 other girls on each side working on math and english respectively.  I LOVED IT!  I brought some pencils down here to use in class and the girls really liked them.  It is amazing how something so trivial can make such an impact!  I donīt often feel old, but when Katherine (my traveling buddy) couldnīt figure how to solve percentage problems without a calulator I felt REALLY old.  Not only did I have to help the kids, I had to show her how to do it too.  How is the youth of today going to function without technology?

That is it for today.  I need to grab lunch and get to work.  I will update again on Monday with details from the weekend.  Love to all...
Amy

Sholom Sissy. So glad to hear you are doing well. Thanks for the phone call the other day. I was bummed to have missed you. Your home number came up in my caller ID...are you really in Ecuador after all? Or, is this all a big scam? Maire got her birthday package and let me thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving each of the girls their own set of maracas. Did I upset you before your cruise? Thank you for Maire's life size teddy bear. She loves it...except for when it occasionally sheds. Then she freaks. I thought for sure I had a scorpion on my chest the other day only to find it was teddy bear hair. Maire calmed down after a few hours. I want to send you a little care package. Would you be so kind as to email me your mailing address. Please break it down line by line so I'm guaranteed it will make it to you. I hope you wore some serious sun screen while visitng the equator. Otherwise you may be cruising around Ecuador looking like a blonde lobster. Hugs and kisses and lots of love...Meg

Greetings!!! Amy, do you have any available credit on your credit cards?? I have been shopping all day for furniture for the lake house. My card is about to melt from heat exhaustion!!! I used it a J.C. Penney today and it set off the fire alarms.

Sounds like your adjusting well. I expect you like the work as much or more than the school.

Oh, and I did want to mention the we do need an alligator or crock for the moat around the Ponderosa, we have decided to give it a mid evil country log look!!! I need to check with Joe on Saturday as I am anxious to see the draw bridge!!

As for the plumbing issues, I can identify. I learned yesterday that I will have to install a new septic system at the lake house. The shower works great it just won't drain!! About a $3,500 expense at the minimum.

Take care

HI Amy,
I am enjoying your posts. What a blessing to be working at the orphanage - a blessing for you and for them :)
You sure are a trooper regarding the shower issues. Experience is everything. But I am with Randy - I will enjoy your pix and your stories but don't relish finding myself there. Take care
love and hugs
jen :)
