Entry: Comments and more info. May 27, 2004

Hello all,  So great to hear from all of you on the comment part of the journal.  Be sure to check all of the journal entries as you donīt want to miss any of the fun and people are posting comments in different places.

First a bit of housekeeping...

Joe - I e-mailed you about the parking ticket at SMS-let me know what you want to do about it-and once again SORRY!

Mom - glad to hear that the cemo went well and that although it took a long time it will be quicker next time.  Be sure to keep me up to date with what is going on and the results of any tests.  THANK YOU!

Randy - I love all of you guys lots and your family (the Walkers) has been awesome to the boys and I.  I consider myself blessed to be a part of it.

Kristi - I brought several bottles of antibacterial hand stuff.  Do not worry!

Ecuador Update:

Class are going well but hard.  I am in class every morning for 4 hours and it flies by since I dont have time to think about anything else but understanding the language.  I am exhausted by the end of the day.  It is amazing how draining using your brain can be. (This is not an opportunity for insults from my fan club!)

The weather here changes drastically during the day.  Quito is approximately 9000 ft more or less and in the mornings it is very cool, rains every afternoon, heats up around lunch time and cools off again in the evening.  They do not have heat of any kind, so mornings are cold getting out of bed and the shower.  That brings up the shower.  They donīt really have much hot water either.  So I have had to be acustomed to a sorta lukewarm shower that pretty much drips out of the faucet.  Water pressure is another issue in itself.  It is non existant.

The food is great. I have tried more types of fruit than I knew existed.  Joe - you would love the pineapple!  Popcorn is often served with dinner.  It is part of the traditional ecuadorian meal.  Our host mother cooks breakfast and dinner daily and has fixed something different and traditional each day.  I really appreciate her willingness to share her culture with us.  She is a very kind and generous woman.  In class today we learned that one of the delicacies of Ecuador is guinea pig. I need to be sure and let her know that I will be passing on that dish and if she wants to skip fixing it that will be super dooper with me!

This weekend we are planning a trip to the cloud forest and to the equator.  I will let you all know how it goes.  I have been taking pictures and will upload them when I return to the states.  I need to get to work so this will be a short journal.  If you have any questions, be sure to forward them to me and I will try to answer them in the journal for all to read.

Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers.  It is hard to be so far away from everyone but I am confident that this experience will be well worth it in the long run.

Side note:  Since Joe says I will have to move out if I bring home any babies, I guess I will try and find some other souvenirs instead.  I am not worried about the credit card balance anymore, I was able to access the checking account via my debit card and that combined with the cash advance I made on the Discover card should help me shop enough to cope with the depression of not being able to bring home some new Ecuadorian Walkers to the Ponderosa.

Amor a todos,
Amy

Eric,

Glad to see that you have thrown your hat in the comment arena. Rest assured that I have already tried the soup and pig that you refered to and they were good. I have discoved that if you put hot salsa on anything it helps with the taste because it burn the inside of your mouth so you are not able to taste anything much for awhile after. Looking forward to hearing more from you later.

Amy, I will give you a break this time. No silly nonsense about the Ponderosa. Well this time, but not guarantees for next time!!! Sounds like you working hard. I am not sure that I am real excited about the menu, the water tempature or water presure. But, I don't that I will ever find myself down there so I guess I have no worries. Based on your journal entries, it sounds like the climate and geographical components of the country are very interesting. I look forward to viewing the photos and hearing more about your travels. Later.

I think you are truly missing out on the cultural experience by not trying all of the local delicacies, namely cuy (whole roasted guinea pig). Please don't go home with any regrets and make sure you clear your plate. While you are at it make sure you try some caldo de pates (soup made from cattle hooves) and lechon (suckling pig).

Take care.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you enjoying this experience. I look forward to the updates so keep them coming. The homefront is non-eventful. Mom is doing great and if attitude can cure cancer she's got it beat. The upstairs bathroom is being redone and that is keeping her busy - plus looking at Lushious Luke doesn't hurt. I saw Mr/Mrs. Schultz (Deanna's parents) in the market today. They were watching Deanne's 2 kids, 3 and 12 weeks - cute kids. She is doing well - said to say HI. Kevin is going to AZ for the weekend to spend some time with the Stoneciphers. He is flying alone. The person sitting next to him will be thankful it is only a 1 hour flight. Gotta go - take care and remember use the antibacterial products.
